Case Study
Social Isolation, Gambling Harm & Emotional Burnout
This case study outlines the therapeutic support provided to a 34-year-old male experiencing significant gambling-related harm, emotional burnout, social isolation, and declining mental wellbeing following a series of prolonged personal and financial stressors. The client initially presented with persistent feelings of hopelessness, emotional exhaustion, heightened anxiety, and increasing difficulty managing daily responsibilities, relationships, and long-term goals. Over time, gambling behaviours had escalated from occasional recreational activity into a compulsive coping mechanism used to manage stress, loneliness, frustration, and negative emotional states.
The client disclosed a history of unstable employment, relationship breakdown, financial hardship, and ongoing feelings of inadequacy and self-criticism, all of which contributed to a growing pattern of emotional withdrawal and avoidance behaviours. Gambling activity, particularly online sports betting and late-night gambling sessions, had progressively intensified during periods of isolation and emotional distress, resulting in mounting debt, disrupted sleep, reduced motivation, and further deterioration in overall wellbeing. The client also reported increasing difficulty maintaining healthy routines, social engagement, and consistent communication with family and support networks.
At intake, the client presented with low mood, heightened stress responses, emotional dysregulation, poor confidence, and significant shame associated with financial losses and perceived personal failure. The client demonstrated limited coping strategies outside of gambling behaviours and described ongoing patterns of avoidance when faced with conflict, emotional discomfort, or financial pressure. Social withdrawal had become increasingly prominent, with the client disengaging from hobbies, friendships, and previously valued activities due to embarrassment, low motivation, and declining emotional resilience.
A comprehensive intake assessment and biopsychosocial review were completed to explore gambling behaviours, emotional wellbeing, mental health presentation, lifestyle stressors, coping patterns, interpersonal functioning, and protective factors. Therapeutic intervention focused on increasing emotional awareness, strengthening healthier coping mechanisms, improving self-regulation, and addressing the underlying emotional drivers connected to gambling behaviour.
Counselling sessions incorporated a person-centred, strengths-based, and trauma-informed framework, with interventions tailored toward emotional regulation, behavioural insight, relapse prevention strategies, stress management, and rebuilding personal confidence and stability.
Throughout the intervention period, the client gradually demonstrated improved engagement with therapeutic supports, increased openness in discussing emotional experiences, and stronger insight into the relationship between stress, emotional avoidance, and gambling behaviours. Consistent therapeutic work supported progress toward rebuilding healthier routines, improving emotional resilience, reconnecting with social supports, and developing more sustainable coping strategies to support long-term recovery and overall wellbeing.

01. Mental Challenge
The client presented with escalating gambling behaviours, emotional exhaustion, financial stress, and increasing social withdrawal following the breakdown of a long-term relationship and loss of stable employment. Over time, gambling had shifted from a recreational activity to a maladaptive coping mechanism used to manage stress, loneliness, and feelings of failure.
- Persistent feelings of hopelessness, shame, and emotional fatigue impacting motivation and daily functioning.
- Increasing reliance on online sports betting and poker platforms during periods of stress and isolation.
- Financial instability resulting in heightened anxiety, disrupted routines, and avoidance of family and peer supports.
- Difficulty regulating emotions following interpersonal conflict, often leading to impulsive decision-making and extended gambling episodes.
- Withdrawal from previously enjoyed social activities, hobbies, and support networks contributing to increased isolation and low mood.
- Reduced self-confidence and negative self-perception linked to unemployment, debt accumulation, and relationship breakdown.
02. Care Approach
An initial intake and therapeutic engagement process was completed to explore the client’s mental health presentation, gambling patterns, emotional wellbeing, social supports, and behavioural triggers. Sessions focused on establishing a non-judgemental therapeutic environment where the client could safely discuss underlying stressors and patterns contributing to gambling-related harm.
Pre- Assessment
Early therapeutic sessions explored gambling behaviours, emotional coping mechanisms, financial stressors, sleep disruption, relationship difficulties, and lifestyle imbalance. Assessment findings assisted in identifying the relationship between emotional distress and impulsive gambling behaviour.
Trigger Awareness
Therapeutic work focused on identifying emotional and situational triggers associated with gambling urges, including loneliness, boredom, conflict, financial pressure, and negative self-talk. The client was supported to recognise behavioural warning signs and develop healthier responses during periods of emotional vulnerability.
Personalized Therapy
A strengths-based and person-centred approach was utilised throughout intervention. Counselling sessions incorporated psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, grounding strategies, emotional regulation techniques, and practical relapse prevention planning. Sessions also focused on rebuilding confidence, accountability, and healthier daily structure.
Collaborative Care
With consent, collaboration occurred between counselling supports, financial wellbeing services, and vocational assistance providers to strengthen overall support and improve stability across multiple life areas. Regular review sessions assisted in monitoring progress, setbacks, and therapeutic goals.
03. Psychological Assessment
- K10 Psychological Distress Scale completed, indicating moderate to high psychological distress associated with anxiety, burnout, and emotional overwhelm.
- Gambling screening assessment identified elevated risk indicators relating to compulsive betting behaviours and emotional dependency on gambling activity.
- WHOQOL assessment reflected reduced wellbeing across emotional, financial, and social functioning domains.
- Clinical exploration identified patterns of avoidance, emotional suppression, and impulsive decision-making during periods of stress and interpersonal conflict.
- Financial stress and relationship breakdown identified as significant contributors to emotional decline and increased gambling frequency.
- Assessment highlighted disrupted sleep, reduced motivation, poor self-care routines, and declining social engagement throughout the escalation period.
- Exploration of previous interests and long-term goals assisted in identifying protective factors and opportunities for rebuilding structure and purpose.
- Ongoing therapeutic review supported monitoring of gambling urges, emotional regulation, behavioural progress, and overall wellbeing.
04. The Outcomes
